Skool vs Mighty Networks: Simplicity or the App?

Pricing last verified .

This comparison comes down to one question, and it is not about price.

Do your members need a real mobile app?

If yes, Mighty Networks is built around that assumption and Skool is not. If no, Skool is cheaper at every revenue level we tested and the decision is straightforward.

Cost, head to head

Members are billed at the standard member price used by the table, with all fees included:

Monthly platform cost at each revenue level. Each amount is the total you pay per month. Bold values are the lowest cost in each column when that result is guaranteed. Ranges show where a platform has not published whether Stripe's subscription surcharge applies: the surcharge component is inferred and not published. The low figure excludes it; the high figure includes Stripe's published rate. A single figure means this calculation does not use an inferred surcharge for that plan; it does not mean every input has been independently verified. Mighty Launch’s $79.00 subscription is the lowest headline price of the two, and it never translates into being the cheapest option. Two reasons. First, $79.00 is Mighty’s annual rate — monthly billing is $95.00. Second, Mighty’s 2.0% platform fee is charged on top of the modeled card-processing stack, giving a real rate of 4.9%–5.6% + $0.30, while Skool Pro’s 2.9% appears to be all-in.

At the revenue level used in the comparison, the gap is $97–$132 per month — $1,158–$1,578 a year.

The app question

This is where Mighty earns its price.

Mighty Networks ships native iOS and Android apps, not web wrappers. Members get push notifications, offline behaviour and the general responsiveness of a real app. On the top Mighty Pro tier, that app carries your branding and sits in the App Store under your own name.

Skool has no equivalent. It works well on mobile browsers and members can save it to a home screen, but there is no app store presence.

For a lot of communities this changes nothing. For some it changes everything:

Your situation Matters?
Members are already glued to their phone all day Yes. Push notifications drive daily engagement
Selling to a corporate or institutional buyer Yes. “There’s an app” is often a procurement checkbox
Members are at desks, engaging in long sessions No. A browser is fine
Community is discussion + weekly calls No. Skool covers this

Note that only Mighty Pro gives you a branded app. On Launch and Scale, members download the shared Mighty Networks app and find your community inside it. That is still a real app, but it is not yours.

Philosophy

The two products disagree about what a community platform is for.

Skool is deliberately minimal. A feed, a classroom, a calendar, and a gamification layer — points for likes, levels, a leaderboard. Founded in 2019 by Sam Ovens and Daniel Kang, its pitch is that setup takes under 30 minutes. The constraint is the product. There is no website builder, no email suite, nothing to configure for a week.

Mighty is built around member-to-member activity. It calls its customers “hosts” rather than creators, sells a framework called Community Design, and claims 84% of content on the platform comes from members rather than hosts. That is the company’s own figure, not an independently verified one, but the design intent is visible throughout the product.

In practice, Skool’s leaderboard is a surprisingly effective engagement mechanic — it turns showing up into a game. Mighty bets on notifications and native mobile instead. Both work; they solve the same problem from opposite directions.

Which should you pick

If you are… Pick
Below $1,056/mo revenue, no app requirement Skool Hobby.
Above $1,056/mo revenue, no app requirement Skool Pro. Cheapest at scale, by a wide margin
Needing push notifications and native mobile Mighty Launch. Pay the $97–$132 modeled monthly premium at the highest tested revenue level
Needing your own name in the App Store Mighty Pro. Request a quote; nothing else here does this
Under $10,000/mo and eyeing Mighty Scale Stay on Launch. Scale’s fee saving does not pay for itself until $10,000
