Patreon's Headline Fee Is Not the Effective Rate
Patreon’s headline platform fee and the amount removed from each membership payment are different quantities. The headline is a percentage applied by the platform. The payment processor adds its own percentage and a fixed charge, so the member price changes the effective rate even when the advertised platform percentage stays the same.
Start with the scope
This article models only the conditions in the “Applies to” line immediately beside the effective-rate table. Do not extend the result to a different page-start cohort, payout currency, payment method, purchase type, or fee variant.
The rate was confirmed through operator manual verification. Patreon’s source site is unreachable from this site’s browser environment by policy, so the operator checked the US presentation from a user-provided screenshot/PDF. That was not a Claude or Codex browser check. The source record below preserves that status and the confirmation date.
The headline percentage is only one input
The table makes both layers visible: the platform fee and the processor’s percentage-plus-fixed-charge entry. The effective rate is calculated as:
effective rate = platform percentage + processor percentage + (fixed processor charge ÷ member price)
The fixed charge is not included in a headline percentage. At a lower member price, the same fixed amount is divided by a smaller payment, so its contribution to the rate is larger.
Effective rate by member price
The inputs are a 10.0% platform fee and 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing. The table adds the fixed processing charge divided by the member price.
Applies to: Standard 10% plan for pages started on or after 2025-08-04; USD payout; credit card / Apple Pay payments.
| Member price | Effective fee rate |
|---|---|
| $5.00 / member / month | 18.90% |
| $10.00 / member / month | 15.90% |
| $25.00 / member / month | 14.10% |
| $50.00 / member / month | 13.50% |
| $100.00 / member / month | 13.20% |
| $200.00 / member / month | 13.05% |
Separate payout charge: $0.25 per payout. Charged per payout. Not included in the monthly model because payout frequency is the creator's choice.

The table uses the same member-price spacing as the site’s broader member-price analysis. It is a per-membership-payment rate, not a ranking of Patreon against another plan and not a prediction of total monthly cost at a particular revenue level.
How this differs from the broader member-price analysis
The broader member-price analysis includes subscription cost and asks whether changing member price changes the platform ranking; Patreon is outside that comparison. This article does not repeat that ranking exercise. It isolates Patreon’s condition-specific per-payment rate and keeps the separately scheduled payout charge outside it.
How to calculate your own member price
Use the same sequence for a membership payment that falls inside the scope above:
- Confirm that the page-start cohort, payout currency, and payment method match the scope.
- Record the platform percentage and the processor percentage-plus-fixed-charge shown in the table.
- Divide the fixed processor charge by your member price.
- Add that result to the percentage components.
- Keep the result as an effective rate for that member price; do not reuse it as a universal Patreon rate for a different payment method or payout currency.
If you need total monthly dollars, apply the rate to the membership payments in that month. Keep the payout charge separate. The payout charge is per payout, and payout frequency is the creator’s choice, so assigning it to a month would invent a billing cadence that the rate itself does not specify.
Why the payout charge is outside the table
The separate payout charge appears in the table note, but it is not folded into the effective-rate rows. A creator who makes more or fewer payouts changes that cost without changing the per-membership payment rate. It is therefore a separate line item for a chosen payout schedule, not a monthly fee that belongs in every row.
Why Patreon is outside the comparison ranking
Patreon is excluded from the site’s core comparison tables because the source page could not be directly verified in the browser environment. The US rate was still manually checked from the user-provided material, which is enough for this conditional explainer but does not make it a directly verified source in the comparison’s rendering standard.
This article therefore does not rank Patreon with the other public plans. It says only that the advertised platform percentage and the effective per-payment rate are not the same thing. It does not conclude that Patreon is expensive or tell you not to use it.
The operator has not paid for or used any of these platforms as a customer. A free Skool account exists solely to obtain an affiliate link; logging in for that purpose is not the product experience behind these articles.
Scope and source record
- The modeled scope is the data-backed “Applies to” line displayed beside the effective-rate table.
- The processor rate was manually verified by the operator from a user-provided US screenshot/PDF because the source site was unreachable by policy. It was not checked through Claude or Codex browser access.
- The per-payout charge is shown but excluded from the monthly model because payout frequency is a creator choice.
- The linked source record identifies the source URL, checked date, and manual-verification status. Recheck the current terms before using the calculation for a live decision.
